Louisiana Lawnmower Racing Speedway
By Mona L. Hayden

The Louisiana Lawnmower Racing Association was started in 2001 in Winnfield. In 2003, the event was relocated to Wheeling, about six miles east of Montgomery off of Hwy 34 on Harrisonburg Road, to a covered 30,000 square foot banked dirt oval.

Owner Jerry Martin, also known as “Cornflakes”, has created a family oriented organization with an emphasis on good sportsmanship, fair play, and sound judgment from both competitors and spectators in this alcohol and drug free environment. People travel from Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas to race in the 14 different classes ranging from ages 8 to 80.  The covered track eliminates rainouts so every scheduled event is held, rain or shine.  The 5,000 square foot air-conditioned concession building attached to the actual track also adds to the fun and excitement of lawnmower racing, or as Jerry refers to it, “the greatest show on dirt™”.
With about 70 mowers geared up for the races, screaming fans, and all the dirt and noise you can stand on a Saturday night, this is a fun-filled place to spend time with family and friends.

The Louisiana Lawnmower Racing Speedway has been televised locally and nationally. Johnny Roland with Guns ‘N Gears has filmed and replayed this event several times on the DISH Network and KTBS in Shreveport has also become huge fans of the races.

One of Jerry’s finest moments was in 2002 when he met Jeff Foxworthy in Bastrop and discussed lawnmower racing with him. This was the beginning a new friendship and provided new material for another round of ‘redneck’ jokes.  Jerry went on to assemble a mower, complete with a mower wrecker with a hydraulic boom on the back, and a push bumper and strobe lights for Jeff to sign. This extremely loud racer, with Jeff Foxworthy’s signature scrawled across one side of it, proudly boasts on the other side, “If you’ve ever raced a lawnmower, you might be a redneck!”  This just opened up a whole new dialogue…”If your lawnmower might outrun your pickup truck….  If you’ve proposed to your girlfriend en route to a lawnmower race….”

Coincidentally, the best seats in the house are in the Jeff Foxworthy VIP Section. In true redneck fashion, there are six theatre seats positioned to face the racing mowers coming straight ahead!  To accommodate the more sophisticated spectators, bleacher seats are available.

Gates open at 4pm and racing starts at 6pm. Come see the fastest mowers in the country race right here at home.  Jerry (aka Cornflakes) will be glad to see you. Just don’t call him “Fruit Loop” like some cute little girl did at the track.

You can visit their website at www.mowbay.com or contact them at (318) 628-1906. Better yet, show up at the speedway and have the time of your life!
